Resumen del Libro

The education is vital to train the individuals and to connect them with the labor market indeed. In this thesis it is investigated if the offers of the institutions of education superior of Puerto Rico are in agreement with the demand by professionals. An index was created (index of supply of professionals) that compares the specialties of withdrawn of the institutions of education the superior with the occupational demand. The occupational demand is based on the annual openings for occupations that require a baccalaureate degree or and they are based more on the occupational projections to the 2010. The main finding is that the supply of professional bears very little relation to the occupational demand of professionals. One was that the majority of the specialties show to shortage or extreme shortage. This must mainly to that many of the occupations are beginning to require doctoral degrees and an increase in the specialization within the occupations is observed. Nevertheless, 59% of the withdrawn ones are in specialties of extreme excess of supply. So that Puerto Rico can have an insertion articulated in the labor markets must elaborate a suitable policy of supply based on labor demand. The universities must consider techniques and strategies to evaluate the potential markets and to fit their academic offers to these.
