This study was performed to characterize the body condition and blood metabolites from the pregnant alpaca herd at the Kampenaike Research Station in Punta Arenas, Chile, and to also characterize the early growth pattern of the neonatal alpaca. Forty-two healthy multiparous female alpacas were grazed on patures consisting primarily Festuca sp. and Poa pretensis during the duration of the experiment. Weight, body condition score (BCS), and jugular blood samples were taken biweekly during the last trimester of gestation and three months postpartum. Plasma samples were analyzed for glucose, plasma urea nitrogen (PUN), creatinine, electrolytes, and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations. Weight and blood samples were taken from crias on days 0, 1,3, and 7 biweekly with their dams. Dam weight differed as expected. BCS was not different significantly throughout the study.
