Agreement Between Franciscans And Dominicans In Nagasaki, Japan, Concerning Lands Of Antonio De Silva

Autores

Resumen del Libro

Photograph of a contract, dated March 18, 1612 in Nagasaki, Japan, between members of the Franciscan and Dominican orders, in which they agree to have nothing whatsoever to do with a certain property owned by Antonio de Silva. Because of the great danger and injuries that might befall members of either order if they were they to enter the property presently owned by Antonio de Silva, both Franciscan and Dominican friars agree that they will not trespass on that property, nor will they accept title to the property, either by purchase or by gift, either directly or through a third party. They will not seek to use the land for any purpose which would benefit the order, the cofradía, or the hospital, and will not attempt to use the property for building, burial, or any other purpose. Any violator of the contract will pay a fine of 2000 silver taels. The agreement will be subject to enforcement by ecclesiastic or secular judges, although it must first be approved by the prelates of the orders in Manila. Dominicans who signed include Fathers Juan de Santo Thomás, Dominican vicar-provincial, Francisco de Morales, vicar of the Dominican convent, Alonso de Mena, Jacinto de Orfanel, and Domingo de Valderrama. Franciscan friars include Fathers Pedro Baptista, comissary, Joan de Jesus, presidente, and Juan Baptista.
