Ricardo Palma published Tradiciones in 1860, though Tradiciones en salsa verde was never meant to be published at all. The handwritten manuscript was placed in the hands of a trusted friend, as the author feared if the wrong people saw it they would punish him, not for evil deeds, but for crude words.
