Resumen del Libro

A survey of Colombian priests, abortion practitioners, and women undergoing treatment for abortion complications concerning their perceptions of religious aspects of abortion is presented in the context of the history of Church teachings on abortion. The work begins with a review of data on the incidence of induced abortion in Colombia. The point is made that nearly all abortions and abortion practitioners in Colombia are Catholic. A chapter follows on the legal and juridical status of abortion in Colombia. The philosophical postulates underlying the criminalization of abortion and the influence of Catholic teachings are examined. The traditional teachings of the Church are then examined on three fundamental themes that affect the thoughts, feelings, and actions of Catholic women: perceptions of sexuality, of women, and of procreation. Precise knowledge of these elements of Catholic doctrine and of the theological principles on which they are based is of great usefulness for understanding the religious problem of women who abort. The evolution of Catholic doctrine on the theme of abortion from the Old Testament to the current day is examined through analysis of texts, with particular attention to the theological position of the Church concerning whether or not certainty exists that a human person with full human rights exists during the process of gestation. 151 priests were surveyed on their treatment of abortion during the confession. 56 abortion practitioners and over 1200 women being treated for abortion complications were surveyed concerning their perceptions of religion and their motives for seeking abortions despite church teachings. The final section presents proposals by respected moral theologians for a new Catholic moral perspective on abortion.
