Preventive action directed to avoid the increase of improper use of alcohol and drugs demands to go beyond the classical models of scientific inquiry, and search for strategies which focus on resources existing in preventive and assistance programmes. The author emphasises the importance of an active role from the community in creating knowledge and the participation of the individuals who demand assistance.
