José Pedro Guiteras studied natural sciences at Sevilla. He developed his work as a historian and teacher while always under the threat of the colonial authorities. He was charged and convicted in 1849 for being a member of the party of Narciso López. In 1847 he wrote his meritorious work entitled Influencia de la mujer en la sociedad cubana, which discusses the state of womens education and a means to improve it and extend it.. Also noteworthy are his writings titled: Cuba y su gobierno, which exposed his separatist ideas, and Historia de la conquista de La Habana por los ingleses.
