Research based on El Rincón de Guanajuato, an area that includes parts of Guanajuato, Jalisco, and Michoacán states, examines changes in the relationship between small/mid-sized cities and rural areas between 1970-90. Women entered the labor market as workers in local industry and as vendors of imported products, men increasingly depended on earnings as migrant laborers, either in Mexico or, more frequently, in the US to augment farm earnings.
