Based in part on a recently discovered collection of legal documents in the Biblioteca de la Real Academia de Historia in Madrid, this revisionist version of the reasons for the 1767-68 rebellions in Michoacán, San Luis Potosí, and Guanajuato argues that the expulsion of the Jesuits did not cause the rebellions, but that they derived from the ethnic, social, and political organization of people in the villages and towns –Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
