Resumen del Libro

This dissertation studies three novels representing marginalized, forgotten or misunderstood literary texts about a controversial era in Mexican history during the first half of the 20th century: the post-revolutionary Cristero revolts in its two stages in the 20s and 30s. The first chapter is a historical recount of State-Church relationships since before the war of Independence up to the presidency of General Lazaro Cardenas in 1940. Furthermore, that chapter includes profiles on the authors of the three novels (Pensativa, Los cristeros and Rescoldo ), as well as summaries from those plots. The second chapter explores the importance of physical and symbolic geography in the overall functioning of the narratives in the texts, emphasizing its social and religious references. Chapter three analyzes the condition and development of women through its main characters, in both its individual and collective dimensions. Finally, chapter four studies the concept of love in general, but with particular attention to matriarchal and patriarchal love, and how these shape, to a great extent, the beliefs and behavior of some characters in these novels.
