In my dissertation I contest the prevailing apocalyptic representations of Latin American Postmodernity by Euro-North American philosophers and Latin American Occidental intelligentsia who define it as the death of political subjectivity and the death of the social . These inauspicious representations are undermined by the utopian imaginaries that are recuperated in Mauricio Rosencof in Las cartas que no llegaron, Roberto Bolano in Estrella distante , Diamela Eltit in Mano de obra and Marcelo Cohen in Insomnio in literature, Marco Bechis in Garage Olimpo and Fabian Bielinsky in Nueve reinas in film, and the agents of social movements, the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, Movements of Piqueteros, Unemployed Workers (MTD), and the taken over factories (MNER). In these works, even though characters face severe and continuous subjection to sovereign power that attempts to exterminate their undesirable bodies in the confined space of concentration camps, utopian imaginaries are recuperated inside as well as outside the texts. The authors and filmmakers whose works I analyze make readers and viewers consider the following political tools for the recuperation of utopia: (a) imagination, to delegate the un-enunciated voices of the victims of State violence, (b) collective and affective memory, to reconstruct the past that the State wants to erase, (c) corporeality, to react violently to the new neoliberal economic power, (d) opaque language, to register the difference and create new ways to go through Latin-American postmodernity. They create narratives that suggest ways in which the readers and viewers can construct new sociability (the social) and the solidarity (the political) with the marginalized while they make them feel the pain of the others (the affective) and recognize the impotence of the State as a provider of their basic necessities (the cognitive).
