The work of French sociologist Emile Durkheim made invaluable contributions to the discipline. In this, his doctoral thesis, he attempted to establish a science of morality, a concept that he would continue to apply to later works. The division of labor is conceived of as an inevitable product of increasingly complex societies, and, fundamentally, is characterized as a system of reciprocal dependence and consensus based on a system of rules.
