Resumen del Libro

Both realism and Spanish have proven to be perennial and resilient categories when it comes to judge film and culture produced in Spain. In analyzing a selection of recent films by Spanish filmmakers Iciar Bollain, Fernando Leon, Achero Manas, and Benito Zambrano (which have been regularly labeled as both, realistic and Spanish,) the current manuscript aims to de-construct and redefine the actual meaning of realistic, national, and Spanish, at least when it comes to assess their production. Taking advantage of a wide variety of primary and secondary materials (such as government policies, attendance data, diaries, newspaper and journal articles, screenplays, and films, among others,) the current study researches the interplay between the aforementioned films and contemporary Spanish culture. In doing so, this dissertation proves the progression of realism towards the current characterization for genre film. It also underlines the active and dynamic construction of the notion of Spanishness through film and culture as well as the mythical character of the relationship between both of this categories and the reality in which they struggle to be relevant.
