Many of the parameters related to masochism in La Regenta are tied into Catholicism. Through La Regenta, my study presents those discursive mechanisms shared by masochism and the Catholic Church—pain, remorse, humiliation, punishment, and the promise to follow the commandments of a superior/dominant figure. Likewise, my dissertation shows the point where masochist behavior differs from that of Catholicism. Furthermore, the theories of masochism become a key tool to reveal how the social repression mechanisms result in terrible consequences.
