Focuses on highly competitive or conflictual electoral contests within important regions in the 1990s: Chihuahua, Baja California, and Michoacán in 1992, San Luis Potosí and Tabasco in 1991, the city elections of Mazatlán in 1989 and Mérida in 1990, and local elections in states of Michoacán and Guerrero. Editors argue that grass-roots resistance is prompting the democratic transformation reflected in these cases –Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57.
