Resumen del Libro

The findings from Guatemalas National Maternal and Child Health Survey (ENSMI) of 1987 were used to analyze the data on womens age of 1st marriage/union and her age during the birth of her 1st child. Guatemalas population is characterized by marriage or union at 17 with a 1st birth following immediately. Of the 5160 women who participated in the survey, 3660 had had at least 1 child, of the 1500 women who had not had a live child, 217 had been married, of the 1381 single women, 98 had had at least 1 child and 50 of those children (51%) had been born to mothers under 20. Of the 3660 mothers who had had 1 child, 1286 (35.1%) had it before 18. Maternal mortality rates for Guatemala have been 27% higher for mothers under 20 than those 20-24, morbidity rates for those under 20 have been 10-20% higher than those 20-24 and infant mortality rates (IMR) of mothers under 20 have been 10% higher than the IMR than for mothers 20-24. Indians have the lowest age of marriage or union with the largest number of children followed by the Ladinos, those ethnic populations follow the same trend in the rural areas with greater differences noted in the urban than the rural areas. For example, women had their 1st child at 15 reach an average of 8.9 which turns out to be highest among Indian women (9.5) and those in the rural areas (9.8). The report also includes life tables calculated for both events with applications from the Coale model and using the NUPTIAL program..
