Resumen del Libro

Puerto Rican artist Pepon Osorio is that one of that rare species of artist, a public intellectual whose creative process directly involves the marginalized communities in the cities where he has worked The original venues for many of his installations were not galleries or museums but abandoned storefronts and department stores. From there they were then exported to museums, inverting and subverting general art world practices Osorios work straddles the realms of high art and popular culture, celebrating the resilience and the ghetto environment that is his source of inspiration The exhibit Pepon Osorio: From Door to Door — which this impressive catalogue accompanies — addresses several audiences at the same time Two of the works are housed in museums, while the third, Badge of Honor, is installed in an abandoned storefront in Santurce, an impoverished sector San Juan Residents of Santurce, clients of several municipal family and welfare programs, and museum visitors will all be shuttled between the three sites. The mingling of these diverse audiences in the museums and in the inner city tackles, in an unprecedented manner, questions of class and access to contemporary art.
