Central to this dissertation is a discussion of how race, class and gender interweave with nation and Diaspora to complicate the essentialist notions of puertorriquenidad formulated both in the Island and in the United States. By doing so, my work undermines the territorial, racist, patriarchal and classist interpretations of Puerto Ricoss national identity proposed by the Hispanic intelligentsia which influenced the workings of traditional national discourses and dominated the economies of knowledge on the island.
