Resumen del Libro

Commission report, dated Dec. 15, 1771 in Manila, to Simón de Anda y Salazar, governor of the Philippines, describing the organization of the papers and documents relating to the expulsion of the Jesuits from the islands and the confiscation of their goods and property. The committee was commissioned on March 20, 1771 by governor Anda to sort, organize, and summarize all the papers and documents relating to the property of the Jesuits, whose expulsion in 1768 was first overseen by Manuel Galbán y Ventura, and then by Domingo Blas de Basaraz. The papers have been divided into 34 legajos or groups of documents, with each legajo describing the disposition of the various Jesuit properties, including the three colegios of San Ildefonso, San Ignacio, and San Joseph, the haciendas de labor in the Philippines and New Spain, whose cattle and fruit harvests helped support the Order, investments from the obras pías, rental income and Jesuit-owned houses, proceeds from the sale of confiscated items which had been stored in royal warehouses, and books from the libraries of the three colegios. Other legajos contain administrative papers relating to the expulsion of the Jesuits, such as the appointment of lawyers to handle the confiscation of property, petitions for release of documents, information on elderly, sick, and deceased Jesuits, as well as those sent to Europe, and receipts for food and clothing expenses incurred during the expulsion. Finally, some legajos specifically concern the expulsion of Jesuits from Cavite, Mindoro, Tondo, the Visayas, Marianas, and Zamboanga, and others contain the correspondence of local officials with the Spanish king and the Conde de Aranda, the minister in charge of the expulsion. The report is signed by García de Gómez, and three other committee members, Gómez Henríquez, Revilla, and Zorrilla.
