Colombias 1990 Prevalence, Demography, and Health Survey was carried out to obtain data on demographic variables and on the health of women and children for planning purposes and for formulation of health and family planning policy. An introductory chapter contains information on the organization of the survey, Colombias regions and subregions, population characteristics, family planning and population programs, and health programs. Other chapters contain information on characteristics of the households and women interviewed, fertility, knowledge of methods and sources of family planning, other proximal fertility determinants, fertility preferences, infant and child mortality, maternal-child health, breast feeding, other aspects of female health, and intrafamily violence. 4 appendices present information on the sample design and coverage, sampling errors, tables for evaluating the quality of data, preliminary results from the national territories, and the complete questionnaires. 8644 women were successfully interviewed. 75% of the women were urban. 3% were illiterate and 60% had secondary or higher educations. The total fertility rate was estimated at 2.9, a significant decline from the 6.0 of 1967-68. Knowledge of contraceptive methods and sources of supply was almost universal. 58% of all women and 86% of women in union had ever used a family planning method. 40% of all women and 66% of women in union were currently using a method. Prevalence among women in union increased slightly from 1986-90, from 64.8% to 66.1%. Only 11% of women in union currently used a traditional method. 20.9% of women in union were sterilized, 14.1% used pills, and 12.4% used IUDs. Use of the pill declined from 16.4% in 1986 to 14.1% currently, while condom use increased from 1.7 to 2.9%.
