O conhecimento do passado que é possível buscar num texto historiográfico não depende tanto da verdade dos factos de que o relato ilusoriamente decorre quanto das relações que estabelece com outros textos, construindo uma rede de significados que constitui em si mesma a teia e a trama da História. Por outro lado, os vários contos e recontos do passado não são invenção nascida de um impulso ingénuo mas intervenção direcionada, constituindo atos de escrita instituidores de poder. Estas duas dimensões da historiografia – literário-textual e ideológico-política – são os eixos orientadores dos estudos aqui reunidos, que identificam, no primitivo campo historiográfico português, diferentes projetos de escrita. Vozes oriundas de sectores diversos da sociedade de então, veiculando, numa memória polifónica, versões concorrentes da história do território e das legitimidades subjacentes ao seu domínio. É essa multiplicidade de interpretações coevas do nosso distante passado que o presente volume pretende dar a conhecer. The knowledge of the past that it is possible to retrieve in a historiographic text does not depend so much on the truth of the account as upon the relationships that it establishes with other texts, constructing a network of meanings that together weave the web of history. The various accounts and recounts of the past are not an invention born from a naïve impulse but a directed intervention, constituting acts of writing that themselves institute power. These two dimensions of historiography – the literary-textual and the ideological-political – underpin the studies gathered here, which identify different writing projects in the field of early Portuguese historiography.
