In Almas en pena, chapolas negras, Fernando Vallejo recounts the life of Colombian poet Jose Asuncion Silva. This unusual biography is a phantasmagoric trip through Bogota at the end of the 19th century. After committing suicide in 1896, Asuncion Silva left Colombia ten of the most beautiful poems of the Spanish language, and to his creditors a sum of $210.000 in debt. A century after his death, Vallejo initiates a search through notaries archives and libraries, and relying upon an abundance of documents and old newspapers, he begins to solve the mystery of the poets suicide and his financial setbacks.
