In the historiography of Mexican literature, women are scarcely represented, especially in the realm of poetic creation. Even in the last twenty years, anthologies of poetry tend to suggest that there are no women poets worthy of mention from the time of Sor Juana in the sixteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century, when Rosario Castellanos was writing. Considering the increasing quantity and quality of womens poetry in the second half of the twentieth century, it becomes all the more necessary to recover and examine the works of some of the women poets who were writing in the nineteenth century.
