Una falsa pero emotiva frase atribuida a Túpac Amaru, prócer de la independencia peruana, expresada en el colofón del discurso de la Reforma Agraria, sirve de pretexto al gobierno del general Juan Velasco Alvarado para enarbolar el nombre y supuesta imagen del cacique cuzqueño, difundiéndola masivamente por todo el Perú. Distintas críticas a aquella imagen esquematizada obligaron al gobierno a buscar la verdadera fisonomía del héroe. Un singular concurso de pintura fue el camino tomado para encontrar la imagen arquetípica del mártir indígena. La presente investigación, basada en la Sociología del Arte, muestra la diversa iconografía de Túpac Amaru, creada, utilizada y difunda durante el gobierno militar desde 1969 hasta 1975, y demuestra también la influencia y la trasmisión de ideología que las imágenes producen en el inconsciente colectivo. A singular painting competition was the path taken to find the archetypal image of the indigenous martyr. This research, based on the Sociology of Art, shows the diverse iconography of Tupac Amaru, created, used and disseminated during military rule from 1969-1975, and also shows the influence and ideology transmission of images produced in the collective unconscious.
