When Agustin Goytisolo decides to return to Cuba after many years in Spain, he does it with the firm conviction that his arrival will help him put in order the delicate situation of his family business. In addition to the constant worrying about the islands political situation and his personal affairs, an unexpected event will make things worse, the murder of his niece. With Cienfuegos, August 17th, the authors have managed to convey the reality of a convulsive era previous to 1898. Slavery, the political situation the language used, creates a novel with personality and an intriguing argument.
