In a crummy brothel in the city of La Vega, we are introduced to stories and frustrations of several characters defeated by their existence: a poet who has never published a verse, a revolutionary who always arrived late in history, and Changsan, the owner, a Chinese man who is always followed by his faithful wife and a parade of sensual, sharp and sarcastic women of questionable reputations. Valdez draws up an impressive depiction of the abysses where the human soul journeys.
