After a historical overview of the rabel in Spain presented in chapter three, in chapter four we analyze the development of this traditional practice in the rural areas of Cantabria up to the 1980s, and chapter five is focused on its urbanized practice during the revival movement from the 1990s. In both chapters we pay attention to the playing of the instrument, its players (the rabelistas), its musical repertoire, and its context of performance.
