Narrativity In Historical Soteriology: Echoes Of The Story Of Salvation In The Salvadorian Narrative Traditions. Contributions For A Narrative Theology

The thesis main objective is to analyse the role that narrative has been playing in El Salvadors theology (it is called by us historical soteriology ) in the last three decades, in order to determinate which contributions that presence of narrative can make if we want to do a narrative theology. The first thing we may do is to investigate the development of so-called Narrative Theology , that is made in chapter one. In it are presented the genesis, development, current status, major critics and a synopsis of the basic principles of that theological line. In the end, the main contributions and the most important lacunae are exposed. Precisely in order to correct those lacunae the Salvadorian theology can be very helpful: the context of theology there is characterized by Christian communities that have elaborated narrative traditions of their martyrs. In the second chapter one of those traditions is analysed, the most famous one, the tradition of archbishop M. Oscar Arnulfo Romero. Once we have shown that in El Salvador exist narrative Christian traditions, it is necessary to investigate the theological consequences of that presence in El Salvadors theology, especially in Jon Sobrino and Ignacio Ellacuria, the most influential Salvadorian theologians. That is made in third and fourth chapters. In them, the role of narrative is studied in two main theological disciplines: Christology and Soteriology. The result of that analysis is that the Historical Soteriology has evolved toward a more influential presence of narrative in the theological reflection. That evolution offers us some theological categories and insights that can resolve the lacunae of narrative theology as were presented in chapter one. As a conclusion of the dissertation, that contributions of Salvadorian theology, the problems that remain unresolved and some indications for resolve those problems are indicated.
