A solid examination of English travel literature and its impact on the development of an Argentine intelligentsia in the 19th century. Argues that certain images of national reality – the Pampa, the slaughterhouse, the gaucho on his horse – were transmitted from the accounts of English travelers into the writings of Alberdi, Echeverría, Marmol, and Sarmiento, who went on to create a national literature –Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
