Stevens has served as a butler for Lord Darlingon, now dead, for thirty years. His estate now belongs to a wealthy American that gives Stevens the opportunity of borrowing his car to take a vacation. Stevens goes to Weymouth to meet Mrs. Benn, a former colleague and housekeeper. This novel reveals a reality much more bitter than the landscapes the butler left behind.
