Compelling in-depth analysis of an obscure, but important, incident of the Porfiriato. During the traditional Independence Day festival in 1897, Arnulfo Arroyo hit President Díaz on the back of the neck and was immediately set upon by the crowd. Arroyo was later murdered in jail by hoodlums thought to be police. The chief of police committed suicide and several of his men were sent to jail, among them, Antonio Villavicencio, the focus of this study –Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
