In the West, we have been presented with a so-called ‘memory boom’ over the last couple of years. An interdisciplinary field has emerged that explores representations of the past through different commu-nication channels, genres and media. This book contains a number of essays on the traumatic and conflict-ridden history of Spain and Italy and how this has been represented in the artefacts of memory coming from different genres and media (literary fiction, films and television, memoirs, commercials, historiographic material, etc.) The essays all deal with the processes connected to memories, negotiations and possible reconciliations, which are tied to the conflicted and disrupted histories of both countries. Despite their obvious differences, the two countries are remarkably similar: Both show significant linguistic and cultural fragmentations, both have been under dictatorships and authoritarian regimes for long periods of time, and from the early seventies onwards both have experienced waves of political violence that have accumulated in actual terrorist operations. Therefore the collective memory of Spain and Italy provides a good example of how a violent past is generated, communicated and transformed over time. The contributions in this book illustrate how artistic and literary discourses are important in understanding memory processes and the construction of a national identity through situations of enforced amnesia or insufficient processing of past conflicts.
