This thesis examines Spanish fiction by the author Antonio Munoz Molina. The paper will focus on two novels by the author, El invierno en Lisboa and En ausencia de Blanca and on the generation of Spanish writers that belong to the nueva narrativa espanola. Throughout these Spanish novels, Antonio Munoz Molina mixes reality with fiction and fiction with reality. This thesis examines what parts of fiction exist in reality and what parts of reality exist in fiction. Through the use of narration, Antonio Munoz Molina invents, remembers, combines and selects in order to create identity in his numerous characters. This paper will also examine how Antonio Munoz Molina uses imagination, fantasy and memory in creating identity in El invierno en Lisboa, and En ausencia de Blanca. In El invierno en Lisboa , Molina uses pop-culture and characters from other major works of fiction as a means of inventing identity. In Ausencia de Blanca, Antonio Munoz Molina incorporates the element of imagination and memory to create identity. This thesis also analyzes Antonio Munoz Molinas perspective on the role of fiction against reality in todays postmodern society.
